Learning to Appreciate Homework

Homework is one of those things that you just have to do in school. Just because you’re starting your first day in college doesn’t mean that you’re going to be able to just skip over homework. You have to make sure that you do the homework even when the professor doesn’t tell you that you have to turn it in. One of the reasons why students tend to bomb tests is because of their flippant attitude towards homework. They would really do so much better if they could just do what they need to do and not stress so much on what other people are doing. Just because you have friends that don’t appreciate homework doesn’t mean that you have to follow their lead at all. It makes a lot more sense to think carefully of the type of lifestyle that you ultimately wish to lead, and then make plans accordingly. Just thinking that everything is going to magically fall into place is too much wishful thinking. It’s better to seriously consider the merits of getting the homework done without being prodded to do so.

One, you reinforce what you’re learning form each lecture. I know that these lectures can be boring. I know that your friends are probably goofing off as we speak. I know that you’re going to find that others are feeling just as bored and tired so you want to join that movement. Don’t! This is where your grades start sliding. If you’re a scholarship student, you have to realize that missing the grade means that you’re not going to be able to get the same scholarships. Your grape point average is pretty important right now. Will that always be the case? Not at all. You will eventually come to a point where your career gets so big that you have experience to be judged on, not just what you did in school. The school stuff will fade into a pleasant memory.

But now is the time to focus on the grades, and that means that you need to focus on the homework. Avoid procrastinating, which just makes you stressed out. If you can focus on the big stuff, then you’ll have time for the relaxing stuff that you want to do.

This is why we recommend doing your homework the very same day that it’s assigned. We know, we know — you’re going to remind us about all of the activities that are scheduled around the clock in college. This is to keep you busy and not feeling burned out, but it’s very possible to overdo it. Simply put, you need to let go of anything that isn’t serving your needs and embrace the things that are making your life feel good. It’s really just as simple as that.

Now is definitely the time to get things moving. Do you need homework help? Get over your pride and see the tutoring office. Do you not understand something time after time? Your professor may not be explaining things to you. Have you talked to them in their office? Most have office hours that are completely open. The professor will be easy on you if you can demonstrate that you’ve really used up every advantage possible. But if you’re just trying to go through the motions you’re going to get eaten alive.

Make sense? Go back and do that homework. Once you see your grades improve, you’ll probably thank me. No worries, you’re very welcome. 🙂
