Literacy Problems and the College Experience
Are you struggling to understand everything you read in college? You’re actually not alone. Literacy problems aren’t discussed much at the collegiate level — that means that once high school is over, everyone expects you to be able to keep up with the flow of conversation. But what if you really don’t understand everything that you read? There’s nothing to ashamed about. You just have to think about what you really gain out of the college experience. Access to higher level information and plenty of attention to detail.
Adult literacy problems in college aren’t addressed in the classroom, but that doesn’t mean that you’re out of luck if you’re dreaming about walking across the stage at graduation. What you need to honestly do is make sure that you’re asking the right questions. If you have problems grasping a subject, you need to let the teacher know that you’re having problems. Even though there’s going to be expectations of you trying to figure things out on your own, there’s nothing that says that you can’t stop by during the professor’s office hours.
Being open and honest is the key to not only getting noticed, but getting your needs met. You just need to reach out to the current resources on your campus.
Explaining to the librarian on campus that you have problems comprehending things can get you pointed in the direction of adult literacy services. Everyone struggles with this from one point or another, but you have to make sure that you focus on improving your skills. It’s not something that will happen overnight, but it’s always worth fighting for a better future piece by piece.
It’s easy to assume that you’re the only person that’s going through this type of thing, but we are happy to tell you that you are truly mistaken. You just don’t see the other people involved. The good news here is that you really do have all of the options in the world of getting things handled. You don’t have to think that you’re going to struggle to get things squared away. You get to reach out to people that are having the same problems as you.
Is everyone going to be honest? Not at all. But all you have to do in life is take care of yourself. The rest will fall into place. Education is something that we feel is open to everyone. There’s no reason to skip out on an otherwise meaningful college experience just because others might assume that it’s not meant for you.
Just sit back and imagine walking across the stage after all of that hard earned work. You’ll have the last laugh then, that’s for sure!
